Program III
ZOLLE: A Work-in-Progress
Tuesday, June 1 at 7:00 pm

The Three Arts Club of Chicago
1300 N. Dearborn Parkway

Before an ambitious new piece of music goes public, there’s effort. Inspiration. And sparks. Watch them fly. Go behind the scenes as ICE composers and performers interact on Zolle, young Chinese composer Du Yun’s new 45-minute theater piece-in-progress. Attend the reading, and a discussion afterwards about the work, its future staging, and the process the composer and performers use.

"One day you are told that you are not of the origin you had thought, but that you are instead from a distant land.  Would you be able to retrace your true history and rediscover who you are from only a clod of earth?  Are we connected forever to the soil of our homelands?" – Du Yun

Zolle, meaning “chunk of earth” in Italian, is scored for narrator, voice, and mixed ensemble. In a melding of theater, music, and spoken word, two wandering spirits meet in a landscape of memory and origin.  Inspired by the poetry of Pier Paolo Pasolini and the photography of Frank Dituri, Zolle dares listeners to ponder their relationship to the earth.

Zolle, a 2004 ICE commission, is underwritten by the American Composers Forum with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation.

ICE is grassroots, and community-oriented. That’s why all ICE Fest concerts are free and open to the public. We are fortunate to attract wonderful audiences; ICE concerts often fill completely. So reservations are strongly recommended: 312 494 2655

ICE Fest is made possible through the generous support of hundreds of individual donations – both small and large – from people who share ICE’s mission of promoting the music of our time. This project is partially supported by a Community Arts Assistance Program grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. ICE is also grateful for the support of the Music Department of Columbia College Chicago.
