SUPPORT ICE | Annual Fund
Last fall, you heard from Claire Chase, ICE’s visionary founder, about an “electrifying evolution” taking place within the group. As Claire stepped down from her leadership role, we celebrated her dream of becoming a true artist collective. From the beginning, as Claire invested her time and money and love into ICE, so did we all. And we gladly did it for the passion, the virtuosity, and the audacious dream of bringing vital and underrepresented voices into the light. And, of course, the even greater dream of making our work open and accessible to our wide and diverse audiences.
As one of ICE’s founding pianists, I was there on that cold January night in 2002 for ICE’s debut in Chicago, thrilled to join this upstart group. Now as the new Executive Director of ICE, alongside co-Artistic Directors Ross Karre and Joshua Rubin and the rest of ICE’s intrepid staff, I have the deep pleasure of working in this curious and endlessly creative collective of artists and advocates—and with you, our dedicated community of supporters, listeners, cheerleaders, and visionaries.
It is because of your support of OpenICE that we continue to connect with our communities through free and open access to adventurous programming; free presentations that account for more than half of our 180 programs this season. We extend free and open access to these performances on DigitICE, our online library of high-definition videos, to an ever growing virtual audience.
With your help, we have expanded our outreach to include EntICE, an education initiative launched last year which pairs composers and ICE musicians with youth ensembles in underserved communities across the country—to create and share brand new works together. We started with partnerships with Tania Leon and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, and Marcos Balter and the People’s Music School in Chicago last year, and we're forging new relationships in the coming year with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and UpBeat NYC in the Bronx.
Through First Page, our bold commissioning program, we invite you into in the process of creating brand new works, from conception to workshops to the premiere and beyond—a program that led to works such as Tyshawn Sorey’s riveting Perle Noire: Meditations on Joséphine and Ashley Fure’s “opera for objects” The Force of Things; and will lead to new works with the inimitable Nicole Mitchell, emerging composers like Morgan Krauss and Wojtek Blecharz, and a new work from Ashley Fure with director Jim Findlay. And through ICEcommons, a database of new works curated by composers themselves, you can help us fuel the ongoing discovery of the new artistic voices.
To top it all off, after a season featuring debuts at Carnegie Hall and in Abu Dhabi, collaboration with Ensemble L’Itinéraire on both sides of the Atlantic, our third year at the Ojai Music Festival, and five new album releases, our exhilarating summer continues with our first residency at the Banff Centre, and our seventh—seventh!—year in residence at the Mostly Mozart Festival.
Together we can do more! Join me in supporting the next chapter in ICE’s (r)evolution. Help us create a stronger and more open artistic community. Pledge your support today!
