calling all Evo alumni (2020-2023) & Copa MMPC Students
Ensemble evolution shifts to an alumni concert for 2024

We're always encouraged to look forward, but for Ensemble Evolution in 2024, we're gladly looking back! ICE is planning this special iteration, called an Ensemble Evolution Alumni Celebration Concert to reflect on and celebrate the amazing relationships formed and extraordinary art created during the festivals since our move to The New School in 2020.

The celebration culminates in a concert of four works by Ensemble Evolution alumni, to be selected by committee, and performed by ICE on June 26th. All Evo alumni are also invited to perform in a group piece, alongside ICE members, to close the concert. In addition, all Evo alums (since 2020) will be invited to participate in programmed activities, led by Co-Directors Fay Victor and Rebekah Heller, throughout the final day. In 2025, Ensemble Evolution resumes looking forward with a brand new week of the invigorating programming we're known for.

During the day, you’ll have a chance to catch up with other alums, and join a workshop run by Co-Directors Fay Victor and Rebekah Heller, and other members of the ICE community.

In the evening, you’re invited to participate in a special celebration concert, joining other alums and ICE musicians where most of the works on the program will be by…you!

More Info about Program

Conceived by Claire Chase and Steven Schick, previously in residence at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, and re-imagined in partnership with The New School by Ross Karre and Rebekah Heller, Ensemble Evolution is a summer intensive that gives musicians the opportunity to create side-by-side with members of the International Contemporary Ensemble and renowned guest artists, engaging in a holistic approach to creative practice, building community, and imagining pathways forward for the future of collective music making.

One hallmark of the program is the foundation of democratic principles that underpin its operation. Unlike many summer music intensives, Ensemble Evolution participants take key roles in shaping all elements of the program, including programming, rehearsing, and producing concerts.  The program culminates in a participant-driven day of performance. Additionally, Ensemble Evolution participants will explore the New School’s Arts Management and Entrepreneurship curriculum, and work alongside the Ensemble, New School faculty, and collaborators to conceive, workshop, rehearse, and premiere new works.

The International Contemporary Ensemble and The New School's College of Performing Arts upholds the We Have Voice Code of Conduct for Performing Arts.

The International Contemporary Ensemble values the ideas and creativity that each applicant brings to the table, and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive collaborative working space. All applicants will receive consideration for participation without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, familial status, sexual orientation, national origin, ability, age, or veteran status.

Commitment to Equity: We at the International Contemporary Ensemble believe that as a collective committed to advancing experimental music, it is our responsibility to challenge our biases and practices around who performs, or has their works performed, on the world’s stages. We acknowledge that Western European classical music has excluded individuals based on wealth, race, sex, pedigree, background, gender-identity, disability, and sexual orientation. We are actively making changes to all entry points to our organization to ensure that Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color are represented throughout the organization and on the world’s stages, and that our operations and decision-making structures support building spaces of belonging for everyone involved in the process of developing new music.
